Saturday, June 7

Good morning, gentlemen.

While I slept, thirty-one emails with essay attachments have clogged my inbox. Thanks for all taking my advice about getting your papers done early. But no matter. I look forward to seeing your final assignments.

A few points:

1. Writing Camp begins June 16; that's a week from Monday. There are still seats open, and there is still time to get your enrollment forms in to Avalon. In case there was any confusion, the camp will be held at the RADNOR CAMPUS.

2. I have posted the Summer Reading List in the Nota Bene section to the left. Do everyone a favor and just crank out that reading over the next six weeks. Don't wait until August. No one reads in August.

3. Rising 9th graders, remember my five rules for surviving high school. First, pray every day, specifically for the grace not to be a cliche. Second, do something very hard for at least fifteen minutes every day, something that is not pleasant to do and brings no immediate reward. Third, approach your education like a military mission or a sports contest -- something to be actively conquered, not something to be passively endured. Fourth, don't communicate with girls by any means other than speaking -- IMing and email are for cowards -- and don't speak to a girl for more than five minutes at a time (and if you ever find yourself playfully arguing with a girl about who should hang up the phone first, do me a favor and punch yourself in the head). And fifth, remember: the right thing to do is always the right thing to do.

4. Rising 8th graders, your first essay of Comp II is due Friday, September 5. You have 90 days.

5. I will update the website throughout the summer with new details and a few Hooper Projects. Check back often, and I'll see you either at Writing Camp or in Gaithersburg in the fall.

Thanks for a great year. Thundercats are go.

Mr. C.
