Tuesday, May 20

Gentlemen,

No major breaking news tonight. 7th graders, pack well and have a good time on your trips. Any of you who owes me anything for class, you can bring it in tomorrow and leave it my box first thing. 8th graders, remember to bring your Ancient History books to class for the rest of the week -- your Julius Caesar essays (five graphs) are due next Tuesday, the day you leave for your camping trip. You should be reading chapters 9-11 and culling potential quotes and supports as you go.

HOOPER PROJECT: Congrats to Artoo Whittington for hunting down last night's animal Hoopers. Of course!, a joke judicial proceeding is called a "kangaroo court," a politician serving out his last term in office is a "lame duck," and pro-war people are usually called "hawks" while anti-war folks "doves." Not bad for a droid.

Tonight, some Hoopers from the early days of rock 'n roll. Five crazy points to the first and one to each additional Comper who can tell me: (a) What legendary disk jockey popularized the name "rock 'n roll" to describe the new form of rhythmic, back-beating music in the early 1950s?, (b) Who wrote and recorded the classic "Rocket 88" in 1951, widely seen as the first ever rock 'n roll record?, and (c) What was the first rock 'n roll song to reach #1 on Billboard's pop chart? Let's go, guitar heroes!
