Monday, May 19
Gentlemen,
Congrats, first of all, to new Calvert Captain John Schlichting. And congrats to all you Calverts for pulling Big Green out of the cellar for the first time in a few years. Next year, we pull it all together. Today's updates:
7th Grade: Your High Noon essays are due next Wednesday, May 28th. You only have two more class days between now and then (and the camping trip in between), so get working.
8th Grade: Animal Farm essays were due today. Some of you forgot to hand it in, so I'm going to give a grace day for penalty free hand-ins tomorrow. Essays handed in after Tuesday will be minus five points every day they're late. Also, as Mr. Bostick explained today, your Ancient History essays -- five paragraphs on Julius Caesar -- are due next Tuesday, May 27th. Please remember to bring in your Ancient History text books for the rest of the week -- you'll need them for Comp class.
HOOPER PROJECT: First off, congrats to Sultan Oyeshile for nailing last Wednesday's all-world Hooper: the Great Pyramids are of course the only Ancient Wonder of the World still standing; Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition that circled the world; the highest point on earth is Mt. Everest, and the lowest points is Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench. Good work, Oye.
Next, a deep-throated "Excelsior!" to Drew Dawson, the only Comper to foil last night's comic book Hooper. Yes, Drew: Superman's real name is not Clark Kent, but Kal-El; the lead role on the CBS television series of the Hulk wasn't Bruce Banner but David Banner; Wolverine's metal skeleton is made of adamantium; and Steve Rogers's alter-ego is, of course, Captain America. Well done, Drew.
Tonight, a hairy Hooper of proverbial animal names. Five points to the first and one to each additional Comper who can tell me: (a) what animal nickname is given to a judicial proceeding that ignores the basic principles of justice?; (b) what animal nickname is given to a public official serving out a term in office after announcing he won't run for re-election?; and (c) what animal nicknames are generally given to supporters and opponents of a war? (Hint: none of the answers is this.)
