Monday, May 12
Gentlemen,
Quick update tonight.
1. 8th graders today did quiz #36 on quoting "Stopping by woods..." then moved on to continue work on the Animal Farm essays. Tonight's homework is to start pulling support quotes for your thesis statement.
2. 7th graders today first welcomed back Michael Collinsm, then did the quiz on "Stopping by woods," and finally watched some more of High Noon. Essays on the movie will be due some time next week.
3. Next round of "Ulysses" essay redos are due Friday. J.P., try to remember to put a period on your last sentence this time.
HOOPER PROJECT: Congrats to David Collins, who swept the weekend Hooper, and did so after 8:50 this morning, garnering him even more points. So, the Diesel takes home seven points for rattling off the four Hoopers: Nikita Kruschev was the Soviet dictator who banged his shoe at the U.N.; Alger Hiss was the Soviet spy who worked at the State Department; Mao Tse Tung was the Chinese dictator who oversaw the deaths of more people than anyone else; and Pol Pot led the Cambodian regime that killed 1/4 of the Cambodian people in four years. Collins also nailed the bonus Hooper (as did R2 Whittington): Red Dawn was the preposterous yet awesome 1980s movie about the high school kids who fight the commies. Well done.
Tonight, in honor of the gallant Cleveland Cavaliers's win this weekend over the Boston Celtics, a trio of Hoopers devoted to America's City of Lights. Five points to the first and three to each additional Comper who can tell me: (a) What Cleveland-area river has caught fire several times?, (b) What rhyming nickname was given to Cleveland Stadium, former home of the Browns and the Indians?, and (c) What is the city's leading newspaper?
